TreeTop House

Sited on half an acre, this 4,300 SF residence was designed to reflect the owner’s desire for a minimalist sustainable home in which they could equally live and entertain. Set in a suburban neighborhood, the challenge was to create a layout that would maximize views of the property and adjacent creek while still addressing the need for privacy.

To achieve this, the front entry is all glass but set back from the street. Stepping stones lead over the entry water feature to the front door. Once inside, the main living areas unfold without ever losing a connection to water. Walls and windows are purposefully placed to offer privacy while opening up to the pool and meandering creek.

Centrally located, the Kitchen, Dining and Living Room form one simple space. Natural materials inside and outside continue the unembellished aesthetic. A distinctive stairway of solid cedar orchestrates the daily journey from the public to private spaces upstairs. In order to facilitate the owners request for natural cross ventilation, sliding glass doors pocket into opposing living room walls forming large openings to the pool terrace on one side and outdoor deck on the other. This design feature extends the Living Room from interior to exterior where deep overhangs provide protection from the elements.

Advanced technologies include automated lighting, security, and mechanical systems. Electric smart glass adjusts in opacity at the front entry, maximizing views but avoiding the need for blinds. Green aspects include energy- efficient windows, LED lighting, and Energy Star appliances. Natural ventilation and a beyond code insulated building envelope minimizes the use of air-conditioning. Low-flow plumbing fixtures save water and rainwater is collected for irrigation.\

The result is a sustainable design where light and form balance with the natural environment, enhancing its setting while remaining partner to it.
